Captian dingy Ben

Ha ha that title sounds funny. A dingy is the small boat we use to shuttle ourselves to land. Since I am the designated captian for cricket as of now Ben is the designated dingy captian. We hopped in and away we went into the cute little town of oxford. Adorable. On our way we ran out of gas. Funny. So he started rowing. Against the wind. I said I could help paddle. He thought I meant row and if he can't get it to go how could I? After going ten feet. I said I can paddle on this side like a canoe And you paddle there. Ahhhh team work. Then when we got to the gas station. We put in .75cent worth of gas. What? We did not run out of gas the kill switch Key came out. We have a makeshift key with a lanyard that goes around your wrist so if you fall off the switch turns off the motor. So that was cute. I like paddleing so no harm done and it makes for a good captian Ben story.
The town is adorable complete with a man that makes homemade ice cream everyday. He is scotish with a thick accent. Today we met a very nice couple, Nancy and Daryl on Makarious. They met us in town and invited us to their boat. Our first invitation. They have been sailing for 35 years so a lot of sailing tips and stories. The best one was ... Daryl explained how to dock the boat and pull my stern in then move a bit forward!!! I can't wait to try it!!!! I am so blessed God just knew who to send to me! Thank you God.
Wherever we go people tell us bought a serious boat. A boat that will take care of us in rough seas. And she's a beauty.
Peace Pam over and out

Beautiful sail. No stress

It's always good to report smooth days of sailing cuz how many of you want to come with us if we report our challenges. we pulled up anchor and motored an hour to get out in the bay and then sail6 hours and we are now tucked back in a sweet bay. But no swimming there are hundreds of jellies. Eeeeek! The sunset was amazng. How could one every get tired of sunsets.
We have not figured out the battery thing yet.
We are sitting on the boat with a nice breeze pouring over our bow.
Owen just climbed onto the mast beam to enjoy the evening with us.
This morning before Ben was up I cleaned out the refrig. There is no more cold food so I cleaned out the humidity so it won't mold. I swept the floor. Oh and I cleaned out one cupboard. Enough work for the sailor.
That's all for tonight.
Going to bed early. All this fresh air is tiring. I know you all have sympathy for me.... Not.
In His hands,
Pam

Up the mast again!

Today is Sunday. Day o rest! So we did rest. We stayed anchored and tried to figure out the battery situation again. Also to figure out why the anchor light (night light on top of the mast so other boats don't run into you while anchored) was not working. Ben, the smartest guy I know, figured it out. First let me say that all by my muscles and a strong winch I lifted Ben up the mast with the halyard. Yup amazing. When the owner Kell showed us how to get to the top of the mast he showed Ben but then he said, " I should have sent Pam up the mast cuz she might not be able to get you cranked up there". But I did! I'm working on my muscles and for those of you that have heard me whine about my ten xtra pounds welp I know I have lost probably five. Of course the sailboat diet is whatever is on board you get to eat sooo when you were shopping for food depends on how strong you were to not buy junk food. Well when we went I kept sneaking Junky food. I bought organic dark chocolate with dried cherries, I found dark raisinettes!, a few cracker, and potatoe chips. So today our cool food is gone. For breakfast we ate the last bit of yoguart, I had the last five grapes and granola. Lunch was hotdogs and sour kraut. And I snuck a few raisinettes then felt guilty and shared with Ben.
Today was church day so we read Acts again and played the guitar - praise songs for me and Ben songs for Ben.
We have two songs we harmonize and play well. Our goal is to get a whole set together. How cute!
Ya know how there are books you want to read and crafts you want to do songs you want to write but never get around to it. this trip I hope to get to those things. Today was a glimse of that. Even thou we did work on the anchor light which by the way was a simple switch hidden under the setee. ( the seat). Each day is new challenges to get us closer and more experienced. It is fun to practice here where the bay is big yet soft on the bottom. God graces us each day with His light love and mercy. And I smile.

Can't start engine. Ran aground again!

It was a beautiful day as normal in the bay. Winds 5-10 nnw. We left the bay and never turned on the engine. We pulled up and sailed away! Pretty Fansy I'd say. Today is Saturday on the bay. That means everyone is out boating. I counted 91 sailboats! Ben wanted to sail. I was ok going until I saw all the boats. It was not as bad as I thought.
We sailed from herring bay to little choptank river. It started windy then turned to the dulldrums. Good practice for us. We waited it out and the wind picked up and poof we were crusing fast at 17 know winds. I wanted to build up the battery cuz we had one battery that was going dead. Ben loved the fact that we were saili g the whole day without using electricity. He was right we had two batteries and only one was compromised. Getting into the river the winds picked up so we sailed as long as possible. (too long maybe?) then we were going thru a narrow area we tried to start the engine but no go!!! Eeek. No need to panic we can sail in the little bay and pull up into wind and drop anchor we will get style points. The only problem with me wasthere was a bunch of boats in that inlet already. We have no power so if we miss the mark we could run into them. A proposition I rather not endeavor on. So I must have cut the edge too close. Oh we turned off all our electronics in hopes that all we need is enough juice to start. So I had no depth gauge. There was a ridge of 20 feet to 5 feet. Darn it we ran aground no engine. I told Ben let's try the engine now. Of course I said a few more prayers. Just like in the morning I asked for safety! The engine started and Ben tried to get us off. But no luck. Then another sailboat offered to help! We had engine power they had power and slowly we zipped right out. Afterwards we dingyed over and thanked them profusely they are Pete and Pam. Very nice couple with lots of experience and kindness!
Ben loves to ride the edge of things. I do not. I like safe adventure but maybe adventure is not adventure if it is safe? Hummm.
Now we have no lights on and nothing drawing juice. One extreme to the other. In our defense we are not sure the electrical systems and will call " the Heart" system operator and ask questions. Do u leave the heart on while sailing ? How are the batteries charged. Etc.
Too mush excitement for today!!
I'm going to bed.
Thank you Lord for the people In Our lives you send to us. Thanks for Pete and Pam!!!
Zzzz
oh one last thing. Since the lights are out I went to the head in The dark. I pumped the sea water and the water had biofosferecense. Things that look Fireflies lighting up the water! Way cool! I'm dreaming of fairy princess mermaids of the deep.
Good night all!

Mensa and anchor watch off again -STORM!

How do you put together the radar reflector and where do you put it? On which stay and how far up?
So our first storm anchored at bay...
Why does the weather men sound so urgent? We turned on the weather. Then got gusts of 25 knots. I think. Then off went the anchor watch. We were calm cuz the wind was blowing away from the land. Always good to go out to sea It is better than hitting rocks which there are none here. But going to cliffs might not be good. We battened down the hatch. Turn on the radio. All vessels to seek shelter for an hour. We watched boats come in and hail the harbour but the harbour never responded , twice. One boat anchored with us , real close. Silly. The other went into harbour. I assume they went to anchor. The lightning was a good show. We watched out gps on anchor watch. It looked like the anchor reset itself. Wehave plenty of rode out. 10-1 ratio. While sitting in the storm Ben says, " let sail at night soon". No let's not. We don't even have our radar reflector up. Our anchor light is out. And we don't know how to set the gps for radar. We would run into things. I'm not so good yet with which lights you have on during the night. Bow light. Running light. Mast head light! More learning in the book tomorrow for those answers.
Hey news flash Owen covered his poop just now!!!
Bed time again.
The storm is over for now winds at 5-10 out of the west changing to north. I hope our anchor like the change.
God is our guide.

Describing the bay

First let me say about the day.
We anchored out near the harbour last night. We played our last game of cribbage. I won on a muggins!! How sweet it was to be so far behind then catch up and be in the stink hole only to muggins on the counting portion. Hee hee guys.
Dad was sad to go. We dropped him off at the dock. The winds died down just as we were heading in. Lucky for me. It was an uneventful docking and dad didn't help. Ben n I have to get used to doing it ourselves. Owen for the first time while docking he jumped from the boat to the dock as if to say, "land! I'm free" only to find me jumping off and grabbing him. He is a little bit nervous when I catch him. He still thinks he could be going for another swim.
Owen was happy to walk dad to his car and hangout in the short grass(3 feet high) there is tall grass that is about 7 feet high! Amazing!
I kissed dad goodbye and Owen n Ben n me walkedback. This time Owen was excited to go "home". The boat has been his happy home. Today he showed me the fun of afternoon naps. Him and I snuck a nice nappy.
Today bible verse talked about having a wonderful wife is good and the differences between men n woman. I'm happy about those differences at times. Like at night Ben is so willing to check the anchor or move the halyard so it stops clanging or check the dock lines. I'm sure he would even pee for me in the middle of the night if he could. Today he figured out the Bimini which is really an awning which is a white tarp. We are now out of the sun. 90 degrees light breeze. It is heavenlyl!
Rememeber I said not many wave here. Well I don't know if it is an east coast thing or a cruising thing but we get all anchored and happy in thus huge bay (10 miles north-south and 3 or 4 miles then out in the bay) plenty of room. Camping ettiquette it you pitch the tent away from the first person there. So he anchors oh 100 yards. Silly.
The bay is shallow and muddy. Many people have small boat where they crab hunt. Ya put out a line or a crate. Attach a chicken neck. Set many out then come back. Pull up the line and they hang on to the line but don't lift the line too close to the top they will let go. So another person scoops them in with a net. If you crab all day one person said they would bring in 150 crabs. They have 300 baits out at a time. Lot o work!
Everynight we see skate fish (see wikapedia) they come to the surface. You see two tips if them pop up and swim and splash.
The jelly fish are clear. They look like ghost of white and clear swimming on the surface. If I see a jelly I don't go in. So I jelly watch until I feel like they are not there. The water is half salt and half river water. It is an estruary where the sae meets the fresh river water. You can open your eyes under water for a time. It is perfect temperature to cool off our hot skin. It is 90 but I don't feel hot in the shade. I just dump in the water while anchored whenever I feel like it.
It's only been one day and I miss ice cream and ice. Two vises. We have a refrig but only works when the engine is on. Otherwise it would eat up the battery power. Ben n I are trying to live on little and live happily with less. Bens not into food as much as me. Hey I think that is a guy girl difference thing. Since menapause I'm way hungrier cuz I'm taken bio identical hormones. It does something to me. I am getting great exercise. I should count howmany times a day I go up and down the companion way six hight steep steps up and down. The other day I hoisted the sail. A mighty feet if you ask me but I know I can do it. I will have to figure out how to do everything so on long ocean passages I can give Ben a break. This is all fun and training.
Now the sun is setting and I'm done blogging. Good night all.
Peace and happy nappys be with you. In His Grace, Pam

So we shopped. Waited for hight tide and shoveled off. This time not so good at backing the winds were about 7 knots. And that wind blew me over to one side while trying to exit. Cricket does not like harbour stalls and neither do I. Right now she is anchored. Happily I might add in herring bay. Supposed to rain and t storm tomorrow. We will send dad back to the dock.
Tomorrow starts the big adventure with my best friend Ben.
Tonight the stars are out, winds out of the S, the moon is a cressent orange color. We all swam (no jellie). Thanks jacquie for finding out that info for me about stings.
How big of a holding tank for pee and poop do we have? I betcha you could care less. Well how much bio cleaner stuff does one empty in the tank?
Still can't find the tackometer wires on the fly wheel. The anchor light is out so it looks like Ben will climb up it to see if he bumped anything from his last mast climbing encounter.

Owen Over Board

Ok ok it's not like he fell off. It was time for him to know what was out there so he won't want to jump or walk on the railings.
Ben and I went swimming in the bay today, me for the first time. (there were no jellies that we could see) after our swim I handed owen to Ben who was still in the water. Owen's eyes got huge and he flew up the ladder. all that ladder training while on the hard did him good. He knew exactly what to do. so now when we leave the boat we will put out the ladder incase he jumps in which after today I doubt he will try it any time too soon.
Today we have friends of dad come. It was a first time for me swimming in the Bay, a first time for his friends going sailing, a first time for owen swimming, a first time for dad lassoo-ing a line around the pilon for parking the boat, a first for fishing although I did not fish Dad's buddy fished, a lot of firsts.
for those of you that did not answer about what to do with Jelly fish stings, Joe said to put meat tendorizer or clorox on the stinging part and it nutralizes it. My grocery shopping list now includes meat tendorizer.
Another successful backing job and coming to the slip job by me! of course I could not do it with out Ben. He is getting to know really well how to direct me to the slip. I was coming in a bit fast and he calmly said, slow down. I had a cross breeze so I learned a little bit of what not to do with a cross breeze.
I had a mensa puzzler for the day but forgot it now and it was a good one too.
oh here is another answer to the tackometer on the Yanmar engine... the guy at Yanmar said that the contacts are rusted. They are not on the alternator they are on the fly wheel. we stillhavenot found them yet. we have a 4jh4 engine so if anyone wants to enlighten us... I'm all ears. pictures are good for us. smile.
it is offical my sunscreen smells nice but does not work! I loaned the sunscreen to the friends that came cuz they forgot sunscreen and they got a little crispy too.
tomorrow a big day of shopping the shoving off the marina one more time to be gunkholers.
Ben and I are knowing more and more that chesapeake in the summer is not the place to be for wind or for coolness. everyone keeps saying it is hotter than stink here and humid plus no wind come july 4th. soooo we will be chasing the windy spots once dad goes home. (this one is for Nola, you know dad, he arrived 3 days early (surprise) and then yesterday he said he was staying until tomorrow and today he said he will leave on friday. not that I mind but make up your mind. I said he can stay as long as he likes but we are not staying at the "tajmahall" harbour of this earth. why stay here when you can anchor out in the bay and dingy in for free! - I might be a bit stingy but guess who I learned it from. ha ha ha)
I like having wifi for a moment here. I am downloading the new operating system for the iphone! exciting worth day harbour stay this time.
catch ya all later,
Pam
one last thing to be thankful for!!! tongiht while blogging one of our new found friend's kid Triston came running in all excited.... our dog found your cat. we think it is your cat, he is black with a bell. that would be owen... I did not believe it could be Owen, so Ben ran outside and then came back to the wifi room with Owen in his arms. I guess Owen knows how to jump ship. next time when we leave we will pull the boat away from the dock. silly kitty! he was right outside the doors where we were. How did he know we were here??? amazing!!! God is amazing in all his goodness to us. and we thank the peterson's dog "Smeagol" (sp)!!
ok now I can stop blogging. how was that for play by play blogging!

A question. A praise and an observation

I forgot to give praise to the Lord in my blog. Praise Him in everything and in all things! Our creator is creative! Here is the question for the day. ... If you go swimming and a jelly fish gets you. What do you do? I hope Verne and john are reading this one would think a local would know what to do. I want to know the answer before I jump in the water. Oh here is a strange observation ... First I'm MN if you are driving on your block you wave. If you are boating. You wave. If in Duluth on the bay and you see boats you wave. Here I'm going to stop waving only half wave back and the ones that do look at me like I'm a hick. Which I am.
Goingto playcribbage soon.
Bye again

In the dulldrums

We are sitting still in the middle of the bay. The wind died. I'm below and ben is powering it right now. So let me take you back to the night zzzzz 3am our anchor watch went off. That means our anchor could be moving cuz our gps tells us that. We jumped out of bed flew up top to find a nice breeze. We stared at the shore. Nothing. Ben said it is like a firedrill at school we are all outside looking around. Last nIght we set our anchor watch and then tested it to see when it would go off. We thought the tolerance was too far so we tightened it up. A little too tight. The boat had made a complete 360 around the anchor so it sounds. Well we know we both wake up to that sound. Another drill under our caps of learning.
Today I talked on the radio. Another boat hailed us to see if we were really from MN. Ya sure you betcha! Seems not exciting but it was.
Owen had such a nice day you could just tell he gets it. Today he loved to sit in the companion way on the top step and be all contented.
We are back at herrington harbour. I thought we would be out for 5 days but dad needed to go back to the harbour cuz he needs his shower ha ha ha He needs his volka he was all out. So happily we sit in harbour. It's like camping in an RV. Don't get me wrong I can stay in a fansy hotel and use their hot tub swimming pool showers etc. Just like here but why? Plenty soon enough it will be just ben and I. Then we can gunkhole. Sail wherever the wind takes us.
Today was the most successful docking job I have done!!! It was perfect!! Oh yeah!!! Perfect. Of course it was an easy slip to get into. The weather was perfect but hey you still have to make your shots as they say in golf.
I am looking forward to sleeeeeep.
Hey Deanna I have been wearing sunscreen but the first one I used was old and I burnt. I bought an organic no chemical sunscreen ha ha. Well it smelled good and I was not allergic to it! But it did not work. I'm a little red not bad. I think I'll switch to a white shirt.
Miss you all!
Pam

Yesterday, a few more words

Running a ground. I was piloting and reading the map. Trying to see where to go when my father started calling out the depth like a harsh warning signal. I was thinking and I had to say, "I can read the depth yelling out the numbers is not helpful if you want to help look at the chart and see if you can guess where the shoal is lurking." I slowly crawled into the muddy bottom at a reading of 6.8 feet so now I know where the true bottom is cuz our draft is 5.8 the instrument is not calibrated right. Another Mensa puzzler to try and answer. Funny thing our water tank seems fine we filled it again and have been on it for three days.
Yesterday I was crabby so it was a good thing to go to crab claw. My first crabs where you cut them apart. The waitress gave a very good demonstration and I was amazed. Hey crab is a Mensa puzzle too. Yummy but sure takes a long time to crack open and if you are hungry then that is not the best combination.
We dinghyed back to the boat and caught a few weeds. And there was the cute-est sight but two little bug eye shining off the bow. Owen waitied ip for us. He was outside the saloon on deck. Adorable. He live sailing. He has found his favorite spot which is my cubby hole near my bunk. He is there right now sleeping as we sail.
Time to use the head.
God is ahead of me.

Crabby Cakes Me

Wing on wing south to saint michaels. Ran aground. Yup I'm getting to be quite the sailor complete with run aground story. But I'll tell u that tomorrow. I'm too crabby so crabby that I had to eat out at the crab claw restaurant where I ate my first crab.
I'm still blessed and know it.
Goodnight

Our fun fun day!

Today amazing!
First the neighbor lady had to one more time say " are you sure you want to leave today it will be 15-25 knot winds. I smiled and thought to myself today we shall learn how to reef. Last night before sundown Ben and I went through the how-to-reef drill. Set all the reef lines. I felt ready.
The weather looked good and believe it or not the barometer readings I took and applied to the book turned out more accurate than ole NOAA (national oceanianic and atmospheric admin. Or aka the weather God). How's that?? Fun!
The morning was breezy but not windy. I captained us out of the slip with a calm head and no incidents or fanfair. Ahhhhhh
We were two hours ahead low tide so I hurried the crew a bit. Even though it was fathers day. (Connie will like this. I wore my t-shirt that says, "I am the captian" given to me by my father.
We headed for wye river where we are anchored right now. Tummys full of chicken BBQ, peas and chocolate. The fathers are smoking a d I am blogging. Ben is also crabbing with the chicken bones. Hopefully he will explain.
Here is the question of the day. If you are in the ocean you can throw some foods over. If you are in superior nothing goes in the water cuz we drink that water. If you are in Chesapeake bay half half water salt can you throw stuff? Seems wrong but I don't know.
Thank the Lord for perfect weather!
Rest time.

Barometer - a new concept...

...I might have talked through those classes about weather... I might have not paid much attention to those courses... I might of had too much fun thinking and dreaming of sailing to care...

Hi all,
Thanks to those that have put in their 2 cents...
the water hoses are not leaking or off.
I wonder if there is a temporary caulk for steel tanks. we will need to replace them this winter possibly.
today's challenge... trying to fix the rpm/tackometer on the diesel engine. Checked the alternator for power, yup it is alternating electricity, checked the wires - they seem good. we might need a new Tack or find the silly wire that is amiss. we are going to wait till we can call the Yanmar guy I'm sure he will have a clue for us - unless you guys know anything. Dont keep me in the dark. It takes a village (home town) to keep us sailing.
tomorrow is leave the dock with out plans or a place to stay... I think we are making my dad a bit nervous with our non-plans. It depends on the wind. it is forcast 15-25 winds ok for reefed sailing except if those winds are in the morning and if leaving the slip seems to hairy for me... I will make my crew stay an extra day. don't you all agree?
oh, I know my mensa puzzler for the day. I'm learning about weather patterns. we have a book about the weather in chesapeake. I tried to read it this winter but it was too boring. BUT now the book is amazing cuz I have a barometer that I can see and take measurements from and I have the wind direction. I've taken stats today... I'll let you know how it goes. it is different than the bwca for sure.
tonight is the last night for wifi. we will not know when the next blog will come, if our iphones work we will blog, if not we will write in Word then send the days when we are close.
tomorrow we set sail to Wye river - we hope - DEPENDS on wind and weather.
today is the first day I didn't care what emails I had (work related). sorry staff. i'm pulling away from civilization and into the sea life. here we go.
oh, today we went grocery shopping and listened to Verne and John's suggestion get a bunch of your drinks Juice and stuff cuz when you gunkhole you have to walk far to the grocery store and you don't want to carry heavy stuff. thanks for the suggestion.
Oh I keep remembering new things of this day... sorry to keep you all still reading but this is a good story - short.
today we were walking and our neighbor thought they lost their cat - they did not the cat was just hidden in one of the many hiding spaces that cats find. ANYWAY they are new just like us but not half as lucky with their previous owner. We actually helped them... us helped someone else! we've had so many people help us and now we actually know something... we helped them get to Fawcetts, Bacon's consignment, you can't grill on your boat, the showers are good on J dock, grocery place and other small tidbits of info. we both felt proud of ourselves. we will keep in contact with them, they are trying to go sailing on a shoestring too.
May the Lord make His face shine unto you and give you His peace!!!
I shall smile as I sleep knowing all the love my friend send to me - good night!

first sail

let me start from last night.
Owen's second night and he seems to have "the runs". Poor Owen, poor us. his kitty litter is in the head shower place. A perfect place for the pottie. we have a hood on it so it does not stink except for having a sick cat.
Soooo he is up all night and also he is playing and waking us up and playing some more. I have my yarn in the V berth and last night Owen took out all my yarn balls and knotted them in a mess. Today Ben and I have been trying to keep Owen awake! we were annoying him all day.
Ok...
Captian Pam, listened to the weather report - a fine day for a day sail. checked engine (oil etc.) battened down the hatch even though it was going to be a smooth sail with 5-10 knot winds I did not want to have a messy cabin if something happened. Ben asked if we had to batten down everything and I replied yes we will do as many smart precausions while we are learning it is good for practice. I checked the charts, water levels, diesel level, wrote in the log book, wind direction, place we intend to go, and anything else I could think of.
Ben and I are very compatable in how we support each other. I am the captain for now. We also speak the same language.
I have not sailed with my dad since 1997 and that was a weekend sail from Bayfield to bakers island. before that it was 1977 and 1982. It is just as I remembered it but now I am in a different position to analize the situation. we speak a different language but say the same thing. I'd say round this marker on the port, he'd say no the marker is on our starboard. same thing. I'd say we don't want to anchor here on a lee shore, he'd say no you want to anchor on the lee of an island. I'd say what is your heading, he's say, no you tell me the heading you want. He's say fall off - fall off... I'd say I am falling off it just takes this big boat a while to do that.
We practiced motoring too. pretending we were putting the baot in the slip.
here we come in to the harbour. my dad wanted to back in the slip a manouver i wont attempt until i have a calm day and no other boats around me. our overall length is 48 the channel between slips is probably 60 feet or so. he wanted me to drive it in backwards. ha ha ha not in this life time. but I said he could do it. we went down the channel and he had to spin the boat on a dime to move us in a backward position. he did an excellent job at being slow and just spinning. the wind was such that the boat kept spinning around and we found ourselve 360. so around again but this time he was too close at the bow where I was manning. I yelled 4 feet (close to the boat) 3 feet, 2 feet, 1 foot to impact... the boat kept going... he accidently did what I did the first time I drove the boat, he forgot to put the boat back in reverse before throwing the throttle forward... Ben was watching him closely and ran down threw it in nuetral and and slammed it in reverse full throttle back. the bow luckily by God's grace and hands went over the top of the stern of the boat and did not touch nothing, i sat at the bow and touched the boat with my toes. phew.... then Ben did another good thing... another boater asked if he wanted help and he said YES! last time he had declined the offer. but now he knew to say yes, these boats are big and you can use all the help you can get. and obviously we are new. We would help anyone too. plus they want to profect their boat too. it was hair raising to me.
Once again I give up being captian and we get in trouble. I would not have backed it in. oh well, he did an excellent job spinning us for the most part. it is a mistake like me we won't do again. I am super careful.

Ok i'm getting windy again.
later we all went swimming in the pool here where I looked into my husbands eyes and saw pure love. He was very proud to be sailing with me and I him. (hey Dave Solberg Ben only brought his Man-thong along for a swimming suit he forgot his other one at home ha ha ha.... he just looks european)

Before we left this morning I prayed for safety... amen... thank God
Hey I'd love to know who is reading the blogs either send me a short email or join as a follower.

evening puzzler

when running the hot water the pressure turns on when running the cold water the air pressure turns off but the faucet is full of air. their is air leaking somewhere but where??? This must be the thing every boat owner passes on to the next owner... that is Kell told us (the previous owner) that somethings he did not tackle and that is left for the next generation. I think water and tanks must be our little mountain to climb. It is nice that I am blogging to you all. I think someone has to be knowledgeable about my daily puzzlers and mensa challenges. so I'd like you all to chime in when you know those answers.
today the guys patched the dinhgy while I spent a nice time doing accounting work for work.
then we went to Verne and John's place, Sea Wing. we met them last time we were here. a very nice couple! and helpful and knowledgable from many years of boating. (oh just a side note to you all... this blog sight does not have spell check or grammar check, you guys are stuck with my misspellings... just like the old days when I would type out my christmas letters ha ha ha) back to the day....
oh each night the boys and I play cribbage, each of us have won one game, but last night i won the rubber game. I think I should quit while I am ahead, don't you???
Owen, our adorable cat, is testing his witts by actually walking on the deck. luckily he has not wanted to walk on the railings. He loves to catch bugs outside.
oh here is a trivia that I'm sure you wanted to know. while on the hard I walked 394 steps to go the bathroom. in the middle of the night it got old. I have to say I'm getting in shape and am appreciating being in the water.
I still cant get pictures to work, so if you want to see a few pictures Ben posts them on his facebook.
one last thing, tonight we dinghy-ed around the inlet here. calm, very calm, back to warm again, humid (minnesota does not get this humid!) such a beautiful night. i wish you were all here to bask in the Maker's glorious world with me. blessings to you all. zzzzz

she's alive!

Cricket is awake in the seas. she went in the water just fine.
Lets see... boat owning everyone says is a lot of fixing and then re fixing...
today on our todo list we added... fix the engine rpms does not show... must have moved the wirer sensor some how when we changed the oil. (right now Owen is sitting on the table snugging up to my typing hands. he is tring to get used to the boat moving and swaying.) Winds are 15 knots and howling!!! there is clanking all around us with people's halyards dinging. hummm that is one thing I will have to get used to, since I don't sleep well to begin with it will be challenging to tune out those sounds, i will report back later about that. i finally have a computer to type on so a longer blog will be tonight but with that comes me rambling. like i like to ramble... anyone that knows me knows i'm always up for a good story whether I tell it or someone else does... and since you are a captive audiance I will ramble on...

oh yes, back to the fixing: the dingy has a whole due to a wintering mouse. we went and got a repair kit. there is a sailboat shop here that has everyone captive and the "gotcha".... so believe it or not we spent $31 for 6 patches and glue. of course it is guarenteed. ha ha ha... oh and putting together the dingy was yet another mensa puzzle. each peice in it's place and a certian order.

right now my dad is playing sudoku on my iphone... isn't that funny. here in the harbour we have wifi. so for a few more days we will beable to blog after that it will depend on cell phone range. we will see.

fixing the water tank will be a great challenge that we will have someone else tackle this winter. yup we have 2 holding tanks 40 gallons each and one has a leak... how many houses do you know where 40 gallons of water can spill on the floor and it is no big problem and we did not even notice until we tried to use the water and none was there. we opened up the bildge and there was water. simply turn on the bildge pump and poof all gone. no fuss no muss....

Since i have time lets go back in time... adventure trips... i have to say Sharon and i were partners in adventure beginning with mounds park a woods near our house. we adventured there in the summer, spring, fall and winter... on time we even saw a mink! just ask Sharon! we make pottery out of the red clay from the side of the creek, we ripped out pants on rainbow tree that leaned over the creek. we build forts out of sticks or snow depending on what was available to us. we made up silly songs which I still do. that is where i started my song writing career. ha ha ha those adventures took me well into jr high.

I watched my father be Noah on the block and build a home made sail boat from a kit. I helped in many parts of those 2 years. I wish I would have paid more attention to various things. oh well... I went on many a fishing trips and I remember many fishing trips... on time I came home .... never mind I better keep that for a later date. If I care to share. ha ha ha

We have a bimini but not clue as to how to put it on! mensa! man I am going to be so much more smarter when we get back! i;m sure this is good for my business increasing my brain power like this. I have helped out these to men on the boat in many a ways. just ask Ben. I'm sure he is not mentioning the fact that I said, "lets set up the dingy on shore" but nope the guys (mostly my dad) was convinced the dock would be a better place. then we figured out it had a hole and now we had it sprawled all over the dock where people walk. we packed it up and put it back on land. I'm a happy captian. still green though - I have not earned my stripes yet but in time I will.

there is an endless list of going to the hardware store. each time we keep forgetting the washers that go to the sink. of all the things I talked about with what needs to be fixed there are 50 times more things that don't need fixing. for this kind of a boat the previous owner refitted just about everything on the boat. new rigging, bowsprit re done, new engine, new sails, new varnish, new GSP, etc... so i''m not complaining.

the previous owner was sent to us by God. i truly believe that! he has helped us with so much. he spent a week with us to rig the boat, and sail it. he has given everything on the boat to us. thousands of dollars worth of this and that. he is kind and very knowledgeable and has not laughed at us and our dreams. he normally is only a phone call away but this summer he is boating from Alaska to Japan on another boat (motor boat 60 feet) uffda.

oh here is a funny story about easterners and midwesters. we went to out favorite boat shop in annapolis and we were told we could not moor at the city mooring cuz our boat was too big. two shop ladies and a shop guy smiled and the one lady, Bess is her name, said, "oh yes that is right you are midwesterners and you all have to tell the truth all the time - don't you?-... don't tell the truth about how long your boat is. so what if your boat is 48 feet over all, it really is only 38 feet boat, just tell the harbour master it is a Han 38 and you can moor there."

and with that I will end the night... you have way much to read. thanks for you all that send me little feedback on the blog. i think they are boring now... but i'm sure soon they will get a little bit more lively. oh p.s. I just don't talk enough of how Ben and I are compatable in so many loving ways on this boat. there is a lot of communication that happens with all the mensa puzzles and such.
tomorrow the hardware store again.. 2 O rings for the sink, battery for the clock, gas for the outboard, ziplocks, scotch brite sponge... i'm sure there will be more later to add.
one more thing have to soak the oatmeal before bed. steel cut oats ya know.
God is good,
Pam
greet each one of you there from me.

Owen, the smartest cat I know!

If you are thinking of having a ships cat here are a few tips. Have the cat explore every inch of the boat while on the hard so he gets used to the boat and attaches his feelings to the boat so he knows the boat is home. If your cat is adventurous like Owen then he will figure out how to climb down the ladder!! Yup last night I had to pee. I got up and of course owen was catching bugs on the ships deck he watch me go down the ladder and sneak into the woods ( don't tell anyone) when I got done owen was on the third ladder rung down from the top. I lovingly picked him up patted him on the head and said if you go down then come back up on your own. Sure enough ben went out to pee and he saw a black cat. Later on Owen showed up in our berth as happy as a clam. So happy and proud he went in and out, up and down the rest of the morning. I'm so proud of Owen. Tomorrow
will be interesting to see if he goes with a rolling moving boat. We are making him a cat ladder so when he (if he) falls over board he can climb back in.
It is late.
More tomorrow
Oh one more... Today we venture to a pam n ben sail shop. A consignment shop of all things. 12,000 different types of sails. And many many more stufff!! We bought a charcoal grill. I'm not stupid, the more we grill the less I cook. Ben is the best griller I know.

Forgot to add

After visiting Annapolis where fawsetts was we drove back to Cricket and there she was with her new name beautifully put on. Ben designed it and looked for the right font. He is an excellent artist all his own. I'm trying to figure out how to post pictures but have not been successful. Soon I hope.
Miss you all
Pam
Oh what a nice day!
Slept well because we totally annoyed Owen all day so he would sleep most of the night. Ahhh.
We are still on the hard so we have electricity and live the posh life.
Just because one works in a marine shop does not mean you know anything about boats unless you work for fawcetts marine store. They all have to own a boat and live on it. We have combed the place for an O ring for our faucet and we walk in to that store and the guy knew exactly what boat we had. And we don't have a popular model! He used to have a boat just like ours! The store did not have our special part but later that day he found an old one he had in the belly of his current boat! Now that is sweeeeet don't you think?! Praise God for all the people in our path!
I don't know why the font is funny?? Me and computers.
We ended the day with sailing stories and fish stories from bunka Jerry.
Good night all

Day of rest - notyet

Sunday we went to a cute little church just a few yards away from cricket. Very small. Only thing disappointing for me ... No singing! Imagin ! Church and no singing? And it's not even a deaf church. Even deaf churches sing praises! Behind us sat a 90 years old woman that her parents went to that church! The sister church is from the 1700!!! I liked starting out the day there.
Resting the rest of the day... nope. We did things from the list of lists: change oil, clean out water tanks, wash mildew build up from the winter, went to town, and ate sandwiches.
wifi is in the harbour but not on the hard (boats on their holding pedistals on land) so Ben and I went to the bench near the water we got eaten alive, so now we are on the peir "swatting" no I mean squatting wifi... well we really are paying for it we just cant reach it.
My dad has been helping us all day. oh how could I have forgotten to say the stereo with ipod connection is completed on the boat. now Ben feels at home with all his tunes. We had to wake up Paul to ask him a few technical questions which by the way we finally figured it out with all three of us putting out heads together.
there are many things on the boat that are mensa puzzles... the ladder, the stereo, the refrigerator compartment, the oil pump to extract the oil without making a mess and many many more.
I am right now risking my blood to type to you all.
Owen is on the dock for his first time. he is alert and on creeping slowly. the fish are jumping and owen is not sure what to think. we are trying to keep him awake during the day and early evening cuz he loves to keep us awake all night between his bug catching on the deck he will run down to tell us, then he will run back up top.
ok I've had enough misquitos on this dock.
good night all.
tomorrow is filled with a buffer guy, painter lady, electrician and more. stay tuned.
zzzzz good night

Short and sweet

some of you are wondering how my imagination fits with adventure. (some are not) when you have a good imagination then your adventures can be in your mind, then you take those adventures from the mind and try to live them.
The sand box was a good place to start the adventures and then it moved to indian Mounds park in bloomington - where I will tell more tales of adventure.
now back to present day...
Deanna, Ben and I went to Annapolis for the day.
Owen is amazing. He just hangs out on the boat, he wants to jump off onto the ground but he has not not... we hope he never does... It is fun to have a ships cat! and what a sweet cat to have. he has explored all parts of the ship.
My dad is here now. We are all sitting in the cockpit shooting the breeze and talking about boat stories and maintenance.
So far I have not left my lists at home. I have 3 running lists: shopping list (includes things like propane, groceries, sand paper, maintenance supplies. Just to name a few for those of you that like lists), the To-Do list includes such as: clean head, paint bottom , install stereo, etc and ask herrington harbour: where to get pottie tokens to clean out head, how hook to wifi, where to buy propane etc.. If you all want complete lists let me know. I don't want to be too boring.
It has only been 3 blogs and nothing exciting but already I want to see what Ben is writing.
That is all for today.
Love the Lord with all your heart.
Pam

What days is it anyway?

Let me first give praises to our Creator!!! Amen!
I still have jet lag. This will be short due to tired and typing on the iPhone.
Today we visited Kell'e farm. The previous owner. His wife Susan was a great host to be our tour guide of their beautifl farm!!
Today was busy with an electrician coming, set up a painter for the name change, and talked to a buffer dude. Enough work for the day I'd say.
Adventure started in my mind way back while sitting in the backyard sand box. Yup many adventures in my mind grew up in the backwoods. I knew I had a good imagination when I remember making the most delicious looking mud pie. I even had myself convinced. I took a huge bit and spit it out thinking how good it looked and how dumb it was of me to do that... the imagination gets better ... More to come.
Going to bed with all this jet lag.
Oh to answer Melissa. Owen is doing amazing!!! He looks like he loves it here. More cute owen stories later. Miss you all!
Pam

The drive out east

Deanna, Ben and I drove out east to see Cricket. a straight 24 hours. one slight detour. When you get close to washington DC, we found out that all roads lead to downtown no matter how hard you try to get on the right road - we kept coming up on the wrong road - so instead of trying to avoid the gravitational pull of our nations capitol we submitted to the force and went sightseeing for an hour or so.
all of us tired.
I got to sleep a bit on the ride but unlike Ben I want to stay awake until 8pm tonight then sleep all the way until morning. Ben on the other hand is snoozing for a short time then we will all go out to eat at my favorite restaurant in town.
I am home with Ben in my life, so whenever he and I are together we are" home" and when we are on the boat we are "home" now we just need Cricket in the water and we will be home-home-home. It is fun to arrange the boat together cuz Ben moved into "my" house and now we are moving into "our" house.
I will try to weave into the blog during the summer "how I got started on this adventure". it goes way back from Jr High. stay tuned! I hope that little teaser will get you wanting to read the blog.
For those of you new to this adventure and blogging ... Ben and I have agreed to NOT read each other's Blog this way you will get an account of our day with differing views, I'm sure sometimes you will read both blogs and wonder if we were even on the same boat.
Signing off for today's first Blog
I would be amiss if I did not give praise to our creator for all He has done for me and my kids! thank You God
now singing off
Pam
