going to work -

Finally we sail and sail!

First let’s end up New York stories for you all.  The day it rained… oh my… the run off from the city pours into the Hudson River and all that grim and gunk stinks and turns the river a gray-mud-grim with tons of floaty stuff everywhere.  I can’t imagine swimming in the Hudson.  Before we left they were putting up docks for a bi-athalon and people will be swimming!!! EEKK! New York was fun to visit but not my cup-o-tea to live there. People everywhere… and I mean everywhere! I liked the awe and bigggness, the buildings, the food, the excitement but I didn’t like the stink of the city at night when we would sleep on the deck of the boat you could hear all the traffic and smell the traffic. (it was hard to sleep) Also all the dogs pee on the concrete cuz there is so much concrete, there are dog exercising places, but lets be real most of the time they pee on the concrete so that is kinda stinky too as you walk by.  I’m sure you get used to it. We would go back again any day.  There were many things that we would like to do but there was no time to do it.

Then we happily went out New York the east river and past the mountains of buildings and more buildings and commuter boats.  Then we went up to City island which is near New Rochelle where the dick Van Dyke show was supposed to be.

At City Island we went in town. A very cute town.  Being on Kayaks it is hard to know where to pull up and dock a kayak. (we don’t want to pay for a dingy dock stop) so we pulled up to this dock and walked into the restaurant and asked if we can leave our kayaks while we look for a boat hook.. The two waitresses looked like we were from mars and what an absurd question.  They both needed to ask the “boss” if we could.  We said we would stop for a drink afterwards.  (good thing we only said a drink) we went into this little town found a small and delightful marina hardware store complete with cute store owner with a thick New York accent and he used to be the harbor master for the 79th street boat basin in NY where we were just moored. On our way back we stopped for a drink and when we got the menu we laughed, most meals were $39.00 plus the “drinks” were mostly $10 but beer was $4.50 – that was the deal.  Then we ordered our beers and this waiter came over with two huge grilled garlic bread – I said, “humm we only ordered beer” he said it is free. Oh so I guess we got bread too.

This morning we got up. I did not sleep the best since I was trying to feel if we were going to shift too far off near the rocks.  It was our first time anchoring in a 9 foot tide swing. Yikes! We got going no problem.  It was a beautiful day for sailing 8 knots to start and ended with 12 knots on our beam most of the way! I started sailing and then said, “I’m going to work dear” Ben gave me a kiss on the cheek as he took the helm for the day of sailing. He sailed and I worked in my moving office.  How cool is that. It was fun.

We are now anchored in Conn Norwalk bay. Lots of fancy houses! Big huge house all up and down the coastal shores!

Here the swing for tides 8.4 feet. The bottom is rocky.  We are not sure that our depth is right cuz we have a new depth sounder so tonight my hero, Ben, jumped in cuz it is super shallow here.  I did not want to anchor here but Ben felt good about it. He was right. At low tide our instruments said it was 6.6 feet. Ok does anyone remember our draft (the distance our boat goes down into the water). Our draft is 5 feet 10 inches so we just say 6 feet.  So we have right now 6 inches and it has a little more for low tide.   He jumped in the bio luminary water (again!!! This time they were BIG sparks of light. Looked like fire flies all around Ben swimming all over.)  He swam down and it looked like we are in 8 feet of water so our calibration for the transducer on depth is wrong.  We tried to calibrate but no luck.  That’s ok at least we know we are 2 feet off in our favor.

So there you have an uneventful day. (random thoughts): my kingdom for a chocochip cookies! I also would like to have ice and something cold to drink. It’s hot but not as bad as Deltaville!!! I’m too tired again to think at night. I should blog in the mornings since I am a morning person.

Well good night all, Good night Sammy hope you sleep well!
Blessings, Pam
